ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON FAQ

We are expanding CareChain to better serve patients in the province of Quebec, in particular the regions of Montreal, Quebec City, Laval and Gatineau.

We are seeking orthopedic surgeons with sub-specialties in hip, knee, shoulder and spine conditions.

CareChain supports two types of orthopedic surgeon roles: full users and affiliates.

Affiliates are faxed triaged patient referrals from CareChain and will be responsible for scheduling the patient at a mutually appropriate time. Full users maintain appointment availabilities in CareChain, and we will coordinate patient appointment scheduling (including cancellations and rescheduling) with respect to your availability.

CareChain is a turnkey practice management solution for full users. With CareChain, you will be able to complete documentation using the platform’s smart charting and workflow management features and exchange relevant patient information with other health care providers (through CareChain’s automated referrals and consult notes). CareChain’s features are designed to save you time and money running your clinical practice so that you can focus on patient care – features include:

+ Bilingual (En/Fr) user dashboards (provider/patient)
+ Online appointment booking
+ Custom branding
+ Multi-clinic schedules
+ Email/SMS notifications
+ Intake and follow-up questionnaires
+ Smart charting and workflow management
+ Patient care plans
+ Automated referrals and consult notes (electronic and fax)
+ Two-factor authentication
+ Virtual practice groups
+ Integrated virtual care
+ Appointment scheduling support
+ Tier 1 technical support (provider/patient)
and much more!

CareChain is free for orthopedic surgeons in Montreal and across Quebec! Triaged referrals are provided to you with the understanding that referred patients will be seen in an expedited timeframe.

As an independent health care provider using CareChain, you determine which health care services are provided using CareChain, the locations from which such health care services are provided, and when and for how long such health care services are offered through CareChain. You have complete discretion to engage in activities or other business or employment endeavors.

Orthopedic surgeons will receive patient appointment bookings through CareChain (full users) or referrals by fax from CareChain (affiliates).

In the same manner as a typical patient in your outpatient practice.

Suitability for surgery would be decided by you following your assessment. If the patient is referred through CareChain for surgical assessment, it implies that these clients are identified as being likely suitable for surgery by the ensuing surgical assessment, some of the patients may not proceed with surgery after the informed consent discussion despite their suitability. Some patients are referred for diagnostic reasons (non-surgical referral) due to underlying red flags or complex past medical history, these clients generally only need expertise and are less commonly suitable surgery.

CareChain supports two types of custodians of patient records: health care providers and partners (e.g., healthcare institutions) .

As a health care provider, you remain the custodian of patient records connected to any health care services provided using CareChain, unless you are providing health care services from a practice location operated by a health care partner. In such cases, the health care partner will be the custodian of patient records connected to the health care services.

Please submit the registration form. A CareChain representative will be in contact with you with next steps.

PATIENT FAQ

Orthopedic surgeons (also known as orthopaedic surgeons, orthopedists or orthopods) are medical doctors who specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system. Specifically, they offer clinical consultations, prescribe treatments, and perform (non-)surgical procedures for problems that impact people’s bones, joints, tendons, ligaments, nerves and muscles. Orthopedic doctors may work in academic medical facilities, private practices, or hospitals.

In Canada, orthopedic surgeons must have completed four years of medical school training and passed a medical licensing examination before successfully completing five years of resident training in orthopedic surgery. Orthopedic resident training focuses on foundational and orthopedic surgery in the ICU, general surgery, or internal medicine. Orthopedic residents are expected to complete various rotations, which include spine surgery, community orthopedic surgery, oncologic orthopedic surgery, sports medicine, and adult reconstruction/arthroplasty. To earn orthopedic surgery certification, orthopedic residents must pass written and oral examinations administered by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada after their final year of training.

Orthopedic surgeons can treat acute injuries, such as broken bones, dislocations, tendon and ligament tears. They also treat chronic conditions, including arthritis, tendinitis, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Some orthopedic surgeons are generalists who treat a variety of musculoskeletal ailments, and others have sub-specialties that concentrate on certain diagnoses or body parts.

Conditions Treated by an Orthopedic Surgeon
  • Back pain: Commonly caused by muscular tension, herniated discs, poor posture or spinal abnormalities, back pain can seriously affect a person’s quality of life. Several treatment options are available, depending on the patient’s condition, from physiotherapy to surgery in more severe cases. Get a back pain assessment.
  • Neck pain: Neck pain can be caused by poor posture, whiplash, herniated discs, degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis and more. Surgical interventions, targeted therapies and customized rehabilitation programs, help to improve mobility, function, and overall quality of life. Get a neck pain assessment.
  • Hip pain: Hip pain can have a variety of causes, including osteoarthritis, fractures, labrum tears, hip dysplasia and more. It can be treated in a variety of ways, including surgical interventions such as hip arthroscopy, hip replacement or other corrective procedures in more severe cases. Get a hip pain assessment.
  • Knee pain: Knee pain can be attributed to a number of causes, including injuries such as ligament tears (ACL, MCL), meniscal tears, tendonitis, bursitis, arthritis, etc. Treatment options include medical interventions, physiotherapy and lifestyle modifications for relief and improved knee function. Get a knee pain assessment.
  • Elbow & shoulder pain: Elbow and shoulder pain can be caused by a range of factors. Common causes include overuse injuries such as tennis elbow, arthritis, tendonitis, dislocation, frozen shoulder, etc. Treatment could include physical therapy, corticosteroid injections, and surgical interventions. Get a shoulder pain assessment.
  • Foot & ankle pains: Sprains, fractures, tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, arthritis and flat feet are all causes of foot or ankle pains. Depending on the patient’s condition, treatment options may include orthotics, physiotherapy, regenerative medicine or, as a last resort, surgery to restore mobility and relieve pain.
  • Hand pain: Hand pain can be caused by a variety of factors, including repetitive movements such as carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, fractures, sprains, nerve compression, tendonitis and more. Treatments aim to relieve pain, improve function, and restore optimal movement to the hand and fingers.

You should consider seeing an orthopedic surgeon if you are experiencing severe pain from a musculoskeletal injury or chronic condition (e.g., arthritis), that has not/cannot be improved with conservative medical treatment. If your pain impacts your everyday functioning, strength, range of motion, and mobility, then consider asking your doctor or CareChain physiotherapist if a referral to an orthopedist surgeon in Montreal or elsewhere in Quebec is right for you.

In your first appointment at the orthopedic clinic, the orthopedic surgeon will ask you questions about your condition(s), general health, medical history, and review any diagnostic imaging tests (e.g., X-rays and/or MRI). The orthopedic surgeon will have access to your information on CareChain, but come prepared to discuss your medical history, including which positions and activities are painful for you, and the impact your condition has on your functioning. Your orthopedist will perform a physical examination to investigate whether bending forward or backward, sitting, standing or climbing stairs is difficult for you. They will also examine whether you have swelling, issues with your range of motion, and reflexes. Your surgeon will be particularly interested in learning whether you have pre-existing injuries and health conditions (e.g., diabetes, obesity, and hypertension) because these may inform the surgeon’s recommendations for the course of treatment.

If you need treatment for your neck, knee, shoulder, hip or other musculoskeletal disorder, one of our physiotherapists can help. An advanced evaluation and a tailored treatment plan can resolve most conditions. If a consultation with an orthopedic surgeon in Montreal or elsewhere in Quebec is required, we will be happy to refer you promptly.
